Visual/Video Abstracts: Video Abstracts

What is a video abstract?

A Video Abstract is a short video summary of a journal article:

  • 1–5 minutes
  • Highlights results
  • Author describes the paper and its importance (either on or off-camera)
  • Graphics with basic animations describing the research method and findings.
  • Can demonstrate experiment
  • Can show equipment/tools used in the research

Creating a video abstract

Basic steps for creating a video abstract:

Step 1. Select your recording equipment and software

Step 2. Decide whether you want to describe your paper from on or off camera, and whether to include slides, video clips or animations.

Step 3. Write the script (it doesn’t need to be word-for-word). 120-150 words are approximately a minute of video. Aim for 750 words or fewer.

  1. Explain the problem statement the first 30 seconds.
  2. Describe how you conducted your research (experiment you conducted, or literature you reviewed).
  3. Describe specifics of the results (data collected and analyzed), and what they might mean.
  4. End by stating where to read the full article

Step 4. Add intro and outro music that’s licensed for reuse

Step 5. Set up captions/subtitles
