Faculty and Student Publications: Open Access

What is OPEN ACCESS?

The objective of open access publishing is to disseminate research findings to the widest possible audience without delay or restrictions imposed by subscription costs or memberships.

According to the Association of Research Libraries, open access publications are "created with no expectation of direct monetary return and made available at no cost to the reader on the public internet for purposes of education and research." The costs associated with publication are frequently supported by the authors (incorporated into grant funding) or their institutions.

Authors publishing in traditional peer-reviewed journals may retain copyright to permit inclusion of their research in institutional repositories.

Many institutional repositories provide open access publishing platforms that support the peer-review publication process.

Institutional Repositories

Touro Scholar

The repository is a service of the Touro College and University System libraries. Research and scholarly output included here has been selected and deposited by the individual university departments and centers on campus. Touro Scholar includes materials from 2012 to the present. For works older than 2012, please visit the Touro College & University System Faculty Publications Database.

NIH OPEN ACCESS POLICY

The NIH Public Access Policy ensures that the public has access to the published results of NIH funded research. It requires scientists to submit final peer-reviewed journal manuscripts that arise from NIH funds to the digital archive PubMed Central upon acceptance for publication.  To help advance science and improve human health, the Policy requires that these papers are accessible to the public on PubMed Central no later than 12 months after publication.
