Finding A Topic

Conducting a search:

Option 1:  Type a keyword or phrase into the box.

  • You can search by disease, symptom, lab abnormality, procedure or drug.
  • As you type, predictive text will appear.
  • UpToDate recognizes commonly used medical abbreviations, acronyms, and root words.
  • UpToDate will automatically search across all specialities.

Option 2: Browse from the contents menu  (upper left corner of website) or   on the app.

Option 3: Use the voice search feature on the app.

Topics will be displayed by relevance to the search criteria. Search results also contain links to the most commonly referenced sections and graphics within a topic. Filter a search in the top navigation by selecting All, Adult, Pediatric, Patient, or Graphics. Hover over a topic and select the outline icon on the right hand side to expand the Topic Outline, where you can jump directly to a section within a topic. 

Using Graphics

Graphics can be bookmarked, printed, shared, and exported to PowerPoint. In PowerPoint, the graphics are fully referenced and copyrights have been preserved.

There are multiple ways to find and use graphics in UpToDate:

Graphics can be accessed from the search results screen.  Select the tab for a view of all relevant graphics - including algorithms, tables, charts, and pictures.

Graphics can also be accessed directly within a topic.  Click on the thumbnail to reveal the graphic or table. Examples:


Exporting to PowerPoint:

1.  Click on the graphic you want to export.

 

2.  Click on "Export to PowerPoint"  

3.  Open the PowerPoint file. The reference and copyright are below the image.  

Navigating A Topic

There are more than 12,300 clinical topics across 25 specialties within UpToDate. 

  • The Topic Outline provides a quick and easily accessible menu of all the information available within the topic review. 
  • The Topic Outline also provides quick access to related Society Guideline Links, Information for Patients, Graphics, and Related Topics that are referenced throughout the topic.
  • Each topic has an expert physician author and at least two physician reviewers in the specialty. This group performs a comprehensive review of the literature and agree on clear recommendations for treatment and screening

Graded recommendations 

  • There are more than 9,700 graded recommendations in UpToDate.
  • UpToDate recommendations are based on a synthesis of evidence, including that obtained from clinical trials as well as clinical experience. The recommendations are categorized based on the GRADE system, which communicates the strength of the recommendation (strong or weak), and the quality of the evidence on which it is based (high, medium, or low). 
  • Graded recommendations are found throughout a topic, with the grade hyperlinked for more information.

Authors

A list of authors and editors appears at the top of each topic.  Click on a name to see the authors' credentials or on "Contributor Disclosures" to see if there were any conflicts of interest.
